Elizabeth is the second of five daughters. Her mom is anxious that they all marry well... because if her father dies, because he doesn't have a male heir, their house will go to some other guy.
Her mum is kind of embarassing. Her older sister is Jane, she's lovely, and she's got three annoying younger sisters, one boring and nerdy (mary), one silly (kitty) and one flirty (lydia).

Mr Collins, the heir to the property and a cousin, comes into town. He proposes to Elizabeth, but he's an unbearable git so she turns him down, much to her mother's distress.

Mr Darcy comes into town, he appears very proud. All the mothers want him to get married to their daughters, he's a bit shy about it. His best friend, Mr Bingley, falls in love with Jane, but Mr Darcy persuades him out of proposing. Elizabeth discovers this and is VERY ANGRY.

She shares her anger with a friend of the family, Mr ...?? can't remember?? who tells her other stuff about Mr Darcy (he knew him as a child).
Okay so they meet up again.. and in a surprise move, Mr Darcy proposes to Elizabeth, who tells him NO WAY, since he proposes to her saying that in spite of her lower class and annoying family, he loves her. He goes away.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth discovers that Lydia has run off (with out marrying) the guy who I can't remember the name off. This is a huge shock, as her reputation and that of the sisters is ruined.

Mr Darcy follows and persuades the guy to marry Lydia, saving the day.

Mr Bingley returns and proposes to Jane.
Mr Darcy proposes to Elizabeth, she realises that she has been mistaken in her prejudicce against him... and she is in loooove with him.

And it all ends up HAPPY.

Aha, you said that you didn't mind hearing the end. Basically the best thing about it is that it's a really terse and witty comedy of manners. Jane Austen is satirising the society she lived in and the idea of marriage... but she's got a romantic happy ending in there too.

Enjoy!
