It was about a boy who could transform into different animals. When he transformed, it would show just the outline of his body begin to change shape, in steps, until he turned into that animal. I hope I explained that clearly enough.

It's one of a series called Animorphs. The series is about a group of kids who can temporarilly take on the forms of other animals. There are several books in the series.
