Hug them and graciously thank them for their gift and the thought that they put into it, and then, keep it. Engagement, wedding and baby shower gifts are really the only kinds of gifts that you can return and be completely up front about doing so, as most people receive many duplicates of items and everyone knows this. Most people give gifts at these events that cost enough so that when they are returned, there is enough money to buy something that will be used and appreciated.

You should thank them, and mean it. It's not really the gift that's important anyway, but the time the person took in getting and preparing it for you. And so what if you never use it? Okay, maybe they should take some notice to your tastes, but save it and give it to someone that does.

You never return a gift, unless you need a different size. Remember what your mama taught you...people's feelings matter. Keep the gift and always say thank you.
