Diesel fuels contains more energy than regular gasoline in general. A gallon of diesel fuel contains about 10% more energy than a gallon of gasoline.

In Europe, diesel fuels are taxed less than the regular gasoline (petrol) making the gap between gasoline and diesel not are large compared to the US.

I cannot believe the answers here. Diesel is more expensive here in the US because the demand for it dropped and it is taxed to death. There are five states that have banned it for use in Passenger cars, California being the lead in this. The higher taxes are to reduce the demand even further because the NOX emissions from diesel are rising quickly and are the main ingredient in common LA style smog. There is no energy coefficient difference in diesel and gasoline, it is not harder to find, it is just being legislated out of existence by the government environmental agencies.

Frankly it is not clear to me why diesel fuel is more expensive. Where I live, diesel is not taxed more than gasoline. Therefore I would assume it is a simple matter of supply and demand.

Diesel fuel is more economical than gasoline because it is used in compression ignition engines, as opposed to gasoline/ethanol fueled spark ignition engines. Compression ignition means more fuel energy is unlocked in the ignition phase of diesel engines than with gasoline/ethanol. Engineers call this thermal efficiency. Incidentally, this is also why diesel engines have greater torque at lower engine rpms.
