Question

Phil is 24 years older than Stanley. Four years ago, he was 7 times as old as Stanley was then.Find their present ages.

The sum of a man's age and his daughters age is 50 years. Eight years form now, the man will be twice as old as his daughter will be then. Find the present age of each.

P=24+S and P-4 = 7(S-4)
Substitute the first equation into the second.
24+S-4=7(S-4)
20+S=7S-28
48=6S
8=S
P=32
Phil is 32. Stanley is 8.

M=man, D=daughter
M+D=50,
M+8=2(D+8)
Substitute M=50-D into second equation.
50-D+8=2(D+8)
58-D=2D+16
42=3D
D=14
M=36
Man is 36, his daughter is 14.

Phil is 32 and Stanely is 8.

equation 1: p=s+24
equation 2: p-4=7(s-4)

solve equation 2 for p: p-4=7s-28, solving for p, p=7s-24.
Now substitute that into p in equation 1, solving for s: 7s-24 = s+24
6s=48
s=8, so Stanley is 8. Now plug that back into the original equation 1, Phil equals 8+24 = 32.


Following the same method, the Dad is 36 and the Daughter is 14.
