First of all, you've got a problem. There is no such thing as "verbal assault". Words alone cannot constitute the tort of assault in pretty much any jurisdiction. Assault involves placing another person in apprehension of imminent offensive or harmful physical contact. The person needs to physically do something for this to stick.
Defamation involves saying untrue, damaging things about you in public. It is related to slander. So, if your boss said you were a thief and published this information in the newspaper, you might have something, but simply being a jerk while firing you isn't defamation. If what he said was said in private, it can't amount to defamation at all.
You'll probably want to talk to a lawyer about the possibility of damages, for wrongful termination if nothing else. But from the way you've put things it sounds like you're going to have a really hard time establishing any kind of cognizable injury.

Talk to a lawyer right away and they should be able to tell you if you should pursue it. They should charge you nothing for initial consulation. Write down details now because you will probably forget them and when the lawyer asks in just a day or two you will have trouble remembering...
Your boss should have been more professional about letting you go. If there is good reason to let someone go, there are a lot of ways to do it professionally, none of which includes yelling and insulting. Whatever you did to get fired, your boss was also at fault for a clumsy and very unwise way of letting you go.

Well lets start at the begining. What reason did they give you for being fired? You could sue the company for verbal assault and defamation of charactor but you need to have some real solid evidence.

Proving this would be tough. Without any independent witnesses it is your word against that of your bosses.
Though you are pissed off right now, the headache of taking this to court, without some concrete proof is not worth it.

No. However, your employer does not have the right to verbally abuse you. You can get all your legal rights explained to you at your employment rights centre. If you lost your job do to a heated argument, then you will be able to get it back.
