The cord is clipped several inches away from the baby's belly button and then they put a clamp on so that it dries out. The other end is attached to the placenta that is delivered after the baby. It's also referred to as the after-birth. It isn't put back in the mother.

The other end of the umbilical cord is attached to the placenta, which detaches itself from the mothers uterus and is then expelled out after the baby is. No, they don't stuff it back in. That would probably cause a serious infection.
