It's actually spelled pouffe, and according to the dictionary it's from the French, see below:

pouffe
pouf
noun

1. A firmly stuffed drum-shaped or cube-shaped cushion for use as a low seat.
2. dressmaking. A part of a dress gathered up into a bunch.

Etymology: 19c: from French pouf something puffed out.

I'm SO sorry - I really thought you meant the other kind.

The kind you mean is a French word, spelt pouffe, which probably means "foot stool" in English.

OK, so I'm being boring - but at least you get the satisfaction from knowing you caught me out.
