Always ask the questions. Make yourself seem very interested in them. People always like to talk about themselves unless they have some real horrible stuff to hide and in that case you woudn't want to know them anyway. But just start asking really common questions and they will talk and you can listen. Memorize at least 10 good questions before you meet.

Just say whatever comes first in your head? Or else you just say hello and tell your new friend how you feel about getting to know him/her.
