Mind you, this is a HUGE generalization but:
Aerobic (with AIR) exercise strengthens and develops your cardiovascular system, your heart, lungs and blood vessels.
Running, swimming, cross-country skiing
Anaerobic (w/o air) focuses on your musculature
weight-lifting.
As you might guess, a good exercise program has a balance of the two.
Aerobic vs. anaerobic are intended to be GENERAL terms within the context of relating them to exercise rather than taken strictly literally!

It really depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Anaerobic exercise utilizes the sugar stored in the muscle cells for energy as the sugars do not require oxygen to metabolize. The unfortunate side effect is a rapid build up of lactic acid that inhibits the muscles ability to metabolize energy stores. If you are looking to improve your ability to perform very intense activities for a short period of time (say 10 - 15 seconds max) then you want to focus on anaerobic exercise. By doing this you will improve your muscles ability to tolerate and dispose of lactic acid before the muscle shuts down.

Aerobic exercise on he other hand utilizes the fat stores in the body for metabolism. This process requires oxygen and does not produce high levels of acid build-up. The body takes around 5 minutes of aerobic exercise to begin utilizing fat stores. If you want to improve your stamina (ability for the muscle to utilize oxygen - increasing aerobic capacity) then you must focus on aerobic exercise for a minimum of 20 minutes each session.

I don't think anaerobic exercise is even possible as that means "without oxygen", so, yeah...you would die.

So...I would recommend aerobic.

Oops...I stand corrected:

anaerobic exercise is not possible, muscles need oxygen to function. so you would die (is that a benefit to you?)
