Pretty much any Greek myth with a blood curse in it. So, Tantalus, _The House of Atreus_ (three plays, in which Klytemnestra kills her husband, who killed her niece Iphigenia, and then K's kids kill her, and then the gods come in, literally deus ex machina, to officiate the blood curse trial.) Also, Oedipus--he was fairly unhappy, what with not being able to escape fate and poking his eyes out and his mother/wife killing herself...downer. Also Sisyphus.

Dante's Inferno is all about how his enemies will suffer in the afterlife. He meant it as an ironic jab at everybody he hated, but people took it veeerrry seriously. Which wasn't his intent. But it's cool the way he picked a specific punishment for each crime, designed to inflict *just* the right pain on each person who dared to cross him.

Prometheus--that guy got punished *awfully* severely for stealing fire and giving it to humans. Getting your liver torn out every day by an eagle, and having it grow back and having the whole thing happen again the next day...ouch.

The afterlife is often a pretty miserable place. It sucks in the Buddhist and Muslim hells, too. But you can eventually get out of those places. Unlike Greek Tartarus or the Inferno.

What are you talking about? All stories are about misery. They're just about overcoming misery to find happiness.
