One place: VSO

It's an organisation which arranges 'Voluntary Service Overseas'.

It might also be worth contacting Oxfam, Unicef, Comic Relief, DATA or PLAN - they all work in that sort of area, offering aid and volunteers to developing countries.

Have a look on the website for DfID (the Department for International Development) too and see what sort of places they've been sending aid to, and which organisations they've been working with.

One of the simplest way is to advertise in the local paper about doing a trek in South Africa or South America to raise money for a particular charity. Of course sponsors (either businesses or individuals) would need to be convinced they would make money for the charity.

There are organizations that exist for the purpose you mentioned. A detailed listing can be found in the book "Volunteer Vacations", ISBN 978-1-55652-582-7. The book lists projects by location and duration.

Try www.globalvolunteers.org and www.volunteer.org.nz

Take a gigantic pack of fun-sized Mars Bars and as you travel round the world, randomly hand them out to people you feel need a hand. What better charity is there than giving total stranger some delicious chocolate?!

A really good way is to teach English. Some places accept people without a qualification and some require a TEFL qualification. A fantastic website is www.charityjobs.co.uk which has jobs abroad and various links to other organisations.

Try to get some training in your own country before you set off, The Red Cross, for example and be sure to check out that the countries you intend to visit are safe for foreigners, Finally, try to attach yourself to an organisation that cares for you as well as the recipients of your generosity

I have found it a lot easier to get voluntary work once i arrive in a country than trying to organise it beforehand, there is always loads of people that would love you to help out anyway you can
