Not many, cowboys were first called cowpokes because they rounded the cows up by poking them with sticks. It actually works better than herding them by horseback. Hollywood glamorized them a lot, so they ate a lot of beef on the job. They also had their own transportation when they had a horse. They also had protection in the wilderness when they had their own rifles, which was the gun of choice, not the pistol. Sheriffs carried shotguns and rarely had duels.
