You want to strengthen both lower back and stomach muscles. You have a set of small muscles that hug the spine that no one pays much attention to until they have a back injury. Get a towel. Roll it up for your forehead. Lay on down on the floor on your stomach with the towel at you forehead. Arms at your side. Relax. Then, without lifting your head off the towel, raise your arms up and your legs just enough until you feel the muscles along your spine. Hold then relax. Do sets of 5. Then increase. This will help strengthen the support of your spine. Also do back bends. In the same position lift your self up and bend your back, back.

See all the different answers folks. And they all say they "work"! What does that tell us? Simply, there are many different forms of back pain and there are just as many or more different reasons/causes of back pain. Just because your back is sore doesn't mean that's where you look to fix it. Tight and/or injured hamstrings, quadriceps, psoas, quadratus lumborum and leg length difference are the most common causes. Some of these 'causes' can also be caused by an imbalance of some sort elsewhere in the body. What's the answer? Seek professional help. Someone that knows how to properly assess your body's condition. (That rules out your family MO/GP).

Light stretches, I would suggest you go to a physiotherapist and ask them to check your lower back, and then show you how to do the stretches and how many repititions to start healing.
