The canal was necessary so that ships could cross from the Atlantic to the Pacific without circumnavigating the tip of South America, which is what they did before. It was a very long and arduous detour.

The original planned site was Nicaragua. A certain lake took up more than have the width of the country, but they had to scrap that plan because there was an active volcano nearby.

We would not need the canal so much today because now we travel around in airplanes.

I know this was posted 7 years ago, but people don't need to be so rude and tell you to "do your homework" I know exactly what you're talking about because we're watching that same film and filling out the same questions you were 7 years ago today. The film is quite hard to follow along with..

why don't you listen in class or look in your book instead of waiting on people to answer your questions....?
