my Mom fell down on her back...I took her to E.R...X-ray showed a fracture in tail bone about 5 mm.
they do not recommend surgery...just pain killer.
doctor said " she might have to take pain medicine always."

I want to know ,..does this kind of fracture heal without surgery?

she is very brave and is still walking.

The bone will heal on its own. Those are probably one of the few displaced fractures that doesn't require surgery. I don't know how old your mom is, but those in their60's and 70's tend to heal a little slower. Women also have the unfortunate condition called osteoporosis when they get older, which will also slow down the healing time.

Like I mentioned, not all fractures or breaks require surgical repair. Clavicle fractures (collar bone) will be left in their broken position and sent home to follow up with an orthopaedic doctor. I would recommend an ortho follow up, just to make sure she is healing properly and no neurological deficits occur.

My grandad had this happen when he was in his 50's and was told the same thing. He did need pain meds for several months, but although the fractured piece never did reattach and "heal" the pain eventually subsided. On thing you might want to also think about investing in for Mom is a donut pillow like folks get for hemmorhoids (sp?). That'll really take a lot of the pressure (and the pain when she tries to sit!) away.

It sucks and it's painful, but it happens a lot. Especially when you get older because the bones break easier. It will either reattach and heal or it will stay separated and heal differently. They hardly ever do anything about a broken tailbone. So don't worry either way, it will heal, she'll just get a little uncomfortable on it from time to time.

I feel bad for you mother....did she have to wear a body plastic cast? if not than the break was not to bad...I have a question online as well. I broke my back but am in pain from another issue.
The healing will be slow for her..You didn't say how old she is but her health and her age will play a factor in her getting 100% better. Sometimes things like this take as long as 7 monthes or so. Please tell her to slow down!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am glad that your worried about her and taking good care of her

She doesn't need surgery. The tailbone will heal on it's own.
