it'll take the natural gas company more than a week to come to my house and do it

1: Turn off gas supply to the water heater.
2: Take break for about 10 minutes
3: Find a long ...really long match. Look around and see if there's a match holder nearby.
4: Turn on Gas supply
5: There should be a small button located on the water heater control valve.
6. Hold the match in front of the gas outlet you see when you look inside the door of the control area.
7: Push red button....AND HOLD IT IN !
8: Flame should light and remain on after you release the red button...after about 15 seconds.
9. Go get the guy next door to help you if this fails.

You can do it !

The directions are most likely printed on the water heater, but generally you want to make sure that the pilot area is dry. If it is not turn off the gas and use a hair dryer to dry the area. Then turn the dial to ignite, hold in the button and use a long lighter to light the pilot. Once the flame ignites, turn the dial to the desired temp. Good luck!

look near the bottom for directions, probably near a big red knob. They are all different, there should be a setting for light and pilot.

PS you need a long match.
