Your question can have two solutions

First: Hard Install
You can have what is called "Dual Boot" System. You would need to install either of your Operating systems first say Windows, then second any Linux distribution (both would require primary partitions). At the time of installing Linux distribution all you need to do is make sure you install BOOT loader. this boot loader is the main utility that boots either of your Operating Systems when you make a choice.

There are two major BOOT loaders : Grub and Lilo . They are installed in the MBR(Master Boot record) of your hard disk and this is how it is able to boot of any systems from there provided you have edited your Operating system entry in it.

Using a Boot Loader like grub u can have as many Operating Systems as u want all on one Computer.Practically u can go on with Dualboot, triboot and so on..

You can refer to Linux-HowTos for more information.

Second: Virtual Machines

The other way is to use Virtual Machines like Vmware, Parallels
.These applications can be used to virtualize a system inside a running system. You can run two Operating systems simultaneously using these applications i.e. I can run music on one and work with other . But Virtual Machines do need a lot of RAM to work around easily and so First method is a better option for now .

Download Linux (Find all the distros at distrowatch.com)
Backup your Windows System
Restart with the boot disk in your cd drive
Start the Install Process
Partition(usually in the installer, or go to http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=173828&release_id=446881
for GParted.
Continue Install
Be sure to Install GRUB(the Linux Boot Loader) instead of use NTloader(Windows).
GRUB detects windows and linux!
I have done this twice!

You could use Lindows. You could partition your hard drive and install windows on one partition and linux on the other. If you have a new intel chipped mac you could get Parallels software and install windows and linux. You could just install linux and run a windows emulator or wine.

Partitioning is the normal way to do it. I'd suggest backing up your hard drive before you start tinkering with the hard drive & operating system.
