I'm gonna assume that you cannot hang up for whatever reason (work or something). If you can hung up do so.

One thing that sometimes works I learned in NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming). Let's say someone is yelling at you. Try matching their tone and volume but say something such as "Yes this is appalling you're absolutely right"

Most people will not expect an answer like that. It's really hard to be mad at someone who is agreeing with you. That will create a break in the conversation and you will be able to change your tone and voice into something more suitable for you.

I used to try to be nice and calm, finally one day i realized that i don't know this person and i probabaly will never meet them, soooo, the next rude bugger i encountered, i gave them one chance to right their smart mouth, and them i hung up on them. Now that i've practiced it a bit, i have no problem hanging up on them.

Hanging up means you can't take it. Give it right back with precise calm answers. Being calm while someone is being rude always infuriates people.

If you do not know them just put the phone down, never let the caller know that you are frightened or concerned, if so they will keep on doing it, do not ask more than once who is calling or say who's there.

depends on how rude they are..if it's a solicitor, they usually just get hung up on..if it's someone i don't like,or someone that calls to start trouble,or calls continuosly,i get out the whistle, and blow it over the phone...that usually ends them calls... :)

It depends on who they are, and how rude they are. If they are really offencive you can always hang up.
