He probally DID know it was R2D2. If he had said that he knew the robot, then he would've had to say where or when he knew him and, at this point, couldn't let the cat out of the bag about who Luke, Darth, Leia were or their backstories. This would keep it with the storyline and does make sense. (In reality, I do realise the storyline hadn't fruitated to the father/son storyline yet in 'A New Hope'. But my scenerio is possible and very plausable.) :-)

Obi Wan also denied actually being Obi Wan too. Remember, they made it like he had been in hiding for the past 20 years.

I do agree that they screwed up the story by making episodes 1, 2 and 3

Probably because when "A New Hope" was being filmed, they never realized that it would turn out as big as it did. Remember, that movie came out 25 years before the others.

R2-D2 was looking for Obi-Wan that was his whole mission in Hope!

I'm feeling geeky now...Luke told Ben that R2-D2 was looking for his owner and he'd never seen such devotion in a droid. Ben actually says "I don't seem to remember ever owning a droid". He also used different droids when he flew (there were a lot of them around and they were "disposable"). A droid is a droid is a droid...Afterall, I don't remember what my vacuum cleaner from 20 years ago looked like, I doubt I would remember it if I saw it today.

Obi-wan never bonded with Artoo the way Annikin and Luke did. It was just another droid to him.

R2 is a model of robot. If you watch the movies closely you'll see at least a hundred different R2 units. Same goes with 3po
