I agree in part with jam b (above).

But I also think they are trying to do damage control. They want to make the situation not look as bad as it really is. For example, if they cheated - they want to make it look like a spur of the moment thing or a chance occurence rather than something they pursued.

Also, if they stick to the lie long enough - I think they actually start believe it.

I KNOW!!! I caught my husband in a really stupid lie one day and even though I proved to him that I knew better, he still stuck to his lie and said, "There you go." like he made a point. I still make fun of him over that one. I think they think if they stick to their original story, we will eventually doubt what we know and believe them.
