The Panama Canal was first conceived by the Spaniards in 1524,when King Charles V of Spain ordered a survey of a waterway across the Isthmus.A construction concession was granted by the Colombian government in 1878 to St.Lucien N.B. Wyse, representing a French company. Two years later, the French Canal Company, inspired by Ferdinand de Lesseps, began construction of what was to have been a sea-level canal. The effort ended in bankruptcy nine years later and the United States ultimately paid the French $40 million for their rights and assets. The U.S. project, built on territory controlled by the United States, and calling for the creation of an interior lake connected to both oceans by locks, got under way in 1904.Completed in 1914,the Canal is 50.7 miles long and lifts ships 85 feet above sea level through a series of three locks on the Pacific and Atlantic sides.Enlarged in later years, each lock now measures 1,000 feet in length ,110 feet in width, and 40 feet in depth of water. Recently, the people have voted to expand the canal to accomodate today's larger vessels. It is a "modern marvel" because of the great engineering and health problems(malaria and yellow fever) that had to be overcome and where many attempts had failed.
