I think I'm the only 20 year old in the United States who doesn't have their drivers license yet. I've been getting out on the road but I just can't get comfortable. Any ideas on how I can relax and stop being so scared of driving?

My mother died in a car accident when I was 13 and until I was 19, I was constantly scared and shocked over the idea of me getting a driver's license. It just felt so far and beyond me but I finally woke up one day and realized I didn't want to be afraid of anything in my life. I didn't want anything to get in the way of where I'm going or where I wanted to go. I didn't want to depend on anyone or ask anyone for anything. I wanted to be able to go on road trips, drive through old dusty towns, GO ANYWHERE.

So I started slowly. I hired a nice man to teach me to drive and once a week for two hours (about 4 times), we drove endlessly around. He gave me all the technicalities and legalities of the road. No radio, very little small talk, nothing but pure driving.

Then I started driving with my best friend everywhere. We listened to the radio and went all the places, I'd normally want to go. It was amazing! I could go to the gym, the grocery store, a friend's house, the doctor, the pharmacy, I could go all over town and I was hooked on the convenience!

I went to take my driver's license, passed and have been driving ever since (I just turned 22). I make playlists for my ipod or CDs to ease me while I drive. I keep the climate comfortable, I don't let it get too loud, I focus on the road and pay very close attention to what I'm doing.

I've been in one accident (which was scary sure but not the worst thing that's happened to me). It sucks, of course, luckily there wasn't any bodily injury.

Good luck! You have to keep your mind free of the fear and think about the possibilities. Once you do it and get used to it, you'll feel so much better.

Learning how to be comfortable on the road depends heavily on who teaches you how to drive. Try to find someone that has a lot of patience and won't scream at you when you make a mistake (parents and significant others are a bad choice).

Also, are you trying to learn while driving on city streets? You might want to spend some time driving around parking lots and non-busy areas first.

Get someone to take you out in the country or to an empty parking lot and just let you practice being behind the wheel. Gradually start to drive in busier areas. Driving is just something you have to get used to!

When I was 16, I helped my mother drive across america. In the great wide nothings, I learned the confidence to drive well (except i still struggled with the stick)
