There are questionnaires that can asses some of the major signs of Depression, but only a MD, Psychiatrist, or Therapist can make the definitive diagnosis.

Here are the major signs and symptoms:
Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood
Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness
Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex
Decreased energy, fatigue, being "slowed down"
Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping
Appetite and/or weight loss or overeating and weight gain
Thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts
Restlessness, irritability
Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain
It is normal to feel sad or down, especially if it is related to certain circumstances: Loss of a relationship, death or a loved one, illness, loss of a job, discord in family relationships, etc. But if it is interfering with your ability to function in everyday life, you need to seek help.
Good luck,

Depression that lasts for a long period of time would need to be treated. You will know if you're depressed. It's like a loss of things that used to bring you joy. The symptoms are sadness, feeling hopeless over a situation, being down on yourself,. It is good to talk to a doctor if you are not sure, and to discuss your feelings.
It can come from the loss of loved ones, dealing with prolonged promblems, divorce, relationships, or things seeming as though it's not working for you.
Depression is like a heaviness upon that is trying to smother your spirit man. If you are depressed you could try healing through the word as God as well as seeing a therapist. Surround yourself with inspirational people, uplifting, motivational people.
