Geeez Friggin Christ and some of you "call" yourself Electricians, What about the 80% rule, to answer the question you would need a 12/2 awg Copper, I just don't get how some of these people answer a question in the field that they make a living in, even using a 12/2 awg copper it is good for 18amps, if your using it for a Motor load you can rate the wire for 110% of the start up load, because at running load amps it will not draw as many amps, it will drop as the motor levels out.

8 is rated for 45-50 amp 6 is for 60
also 14/3 is for running three way lights or 15 amp 220 and the third wire is for breaking down to 110 example dryer takes 10/3 because it has 110 as well water heater takes
10/2 no break down range 6/3 because it breaks down to 110 on 14/3 it is counted as 2 hots 1 neutral thats what the 14/3 is then a seperate ground

12 gauge is the correct size. By the National Electrical Code, 14 gauge is good only to 15 amps, 12 is good up to 20 amps.
You may need to have this outlet on its own breaker if the load of the one device is actually 16 amps.
And you would only need 12-2, because the ground does not count in the 2. It will be a black, white, and a bare ground. You do not need 14-3.

14 Gauge wire would be good for this outlet - Better know as 14/3 so it will have 3 conductors one will be used for HOT, and one for neutral and the other would be the ground.
