Loyalists?

They were LOYAL to the King.

Why would they separate?

Of course there were rebels ... like Benedict Arnold, for a while ... but I think he eventually came to his senses and his Loyality to the King.

Because they were loyal to the King. They became the Tory party i.e. the Conservatives.

Because they didn't want to. Because they valued their identities as "Englishmen".

Remember, in any revolution, there are going to be people who liked the status quo.
