Simple answer is money. The loyalists were mostly merchants, I think, and they were making money off of Brittain's support. Some other loyalists were on the frontier and Brittain offered them protection from the Indians if they would help them. Most people didn't know or even care why we were at war, so they aligned themselves with the side they thought would win.

Prior to the American Revolution, there were few that were truly dissatisfied with British rule in the colonies. The Brits had, for nearly two centuries, provided the colonies with money, goods, man power, arts and fashion as well as military protection from its enemies. It was only at the close of the French and Indian war when the colonists were presented with the bill for the conflict in the form of a previously unheard of tax that they truly began to built resentment - but even still, this was truly in the minority. The taxes that were passed would amount to only a few dollars per year by modern standards - they were minute at best. Unrest began to build, fueled by propagandists who used events such as the Boston Massacre to build anger and further resentment toward the British crown. Most of the true patriots who were pushing for revolution consisted of the younger generations and the poor. Older, established, middle-class and wealthy citizens - many of them merchants and platation owners - remained loyal to the crown. This was true for both emotional as well as financial reasons. England was their mother and benefactor. They had no reason to want to break away.
