Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Security is of the utmost imporance to me. I use in two computers for nine years, Avast. http://www.avast.com Never had one virus in all nine years. They are out of Prague. They will ask you for your email address so they can send you a free key that is good for one year. After the one year, all you have to do is request a new key.

Avast gives you atleast two or three times per day automatic updates. Plus avast has in my opinion state of the art technology in their background scanner. The background scanner always will catch any embedded virus on a webpage or download and delete or destroy before the virus can enter your system. Plus you get excellent support.

Their corporate version is the same as the free for home personal use. They just make corporate pay.

You can't do better than AVG. Go to:

If you visit the Computer Active web site you can also get free Firewall, anti-spyware and anti-trojan software as well. Programs like Ad-Aware. Spyware search and destroy and AVG are the best free programs out there.

AVG is brilliant, I use it now, only the other day a message popped up saying as of January next year they were no longer offering the free service.

As far as i am aware good as AVG and AVAST are the free versions do not offer detection of script viruses. Using something like PREVX or my prefered optioned cyberhawk may help to plug this gap.

I've had all the super duper free ones but none of them were foolproof. I've now got NOD32 which only costs £30 for the year (and the equivalent in dollars in the US) and I think it's one of the best things I've ever purchased in terms of value for money. None of the free ones caught the viruses which destroyed my laptop.

I currently use AVG free. It has all the essential stuff. The paid for version is more suited to businesses. It updates frequently.
