basically I slipped while grated cheese and took a chunk out of my index knuckle. the flesh was still attatched by skin so i put it back in. two days later it is scabbing, but the bit of flesh I put back in looks like a tiny grey bruise. Is this normal, or do you reccommend getting checked out by a doctor? Many thanks for your help.

The flesh that was cut off is dying because its blood supply was severed. If it's not a large piece it's better to cut it off completely and let the wound scab over on its own. The skin will heal eventually, but it will leave a scar because the knuckle is in constant motion and newly-grown skin can't adapt quickly. You can see a doctor about it to ease your mind if necessary.

the reason that it looks that way is because the blood supply was cut of to that piece of your skin, then when you put it back on the cut, your veins and arteries were not able to reestablish blood flow soon enough, so the piece of skin died, that is why, it looks like that, if I were you I would remove the piece of dead flesh, because there is a chance, a very small chance, but still a chance of gangrene, because it could become infected if it is not watched very closely, you said it was deep, yes?

I've been babying my hubbies ripped index knuckle too! Its been two weeks now!His was discolored too for a bit..and still stuck with that stupid flap...well he sticks his hands in his pocket and rerips it again or wears a wet bandaid all day! now he has this funky lump healing on there...don't worry unless it turns really red and swollen and keep some neosporin on it.

a wound should heal inside out , sounds like it might be healing outside in. In which case it could become infected

the piece of skin that you filleted off is dead.....the only reason you put the flap of skin back over the opening is to protect is a little....when you can take the dead skin and lift it up and cut it with a pair of fingernail clippers...do not tear it off...its best to cut it that way you dont tear any healthy skin...

I'd go to the doctor regardless. You could be at risk for infection.
