Very hard decision. Both shows have it's Pros and Cons.
Meteor Garden (Season 1 only, as Season 2 deviates greatly from the original storyline and sucks) is more thorough in terms of plot, etc, but the actress for Makino is just painfully UGLY. I usually don't harp about appearances, but this really takes away from the show (IMO at least). As in the manga storyline, 2 of F4 are pratically useless characters, though the actors greatly resemble their counterparts. The show is more emotional and in depth, and more faithful to the original story line. Don't get my negativity wrong, it IS one of most popular Chinese TV series, just about everyone has seen it and loved it.
Hana Yori Dano, on the other hand, I feel that Tsukasa's actor is the only one that really resembles him, the other actors, especially Akira, are completely different. The Japanese version is very brief, spanning only 9 episodes, though a 2nd season is in the works (will air in Japan Jan. 2007). It follows the same general storyline but with a few major changes. The side F4 characters all are successfully involved in other non-canon (non-manga) romances, including Akira and Soujiro, the former with the shopowner lady, and the latter with Makino's best friend. I thought this version was a bit more watered down, highly deviant from the original, but funnier. The opening song sequence, for example, is very cute.
Personally, I would suggest that you read the manga first to get the true version, and then watch the Taiwan version and then finally the Japanese version.
But it in all, I would say the Japanese version is better, only because it's more lighthearted and fun, and also because there's a Season 2 coming soon that would make up for its brevity, which really hurt it.
