Is there any rhyme or reason?

No twins on any side. I heard a "rumor" that chance of twins increase with age?

I'm the mother of identical twins so I hear these types of questions alot:

1. Identical twins (monozygotic) are from one egg that splits. All pregnancies have a 1 in 250 chance of being identical twins. This is not impacted by age, ethnicity, fertility drugs, or family history.

2. Fraternal twins (dizygotic) occur when the female produces two eggs in the same cycle. Some factors include fertility drugs, higher maternal age, ethnicity (for instance more common in African Americans less common in Asians), and family history.

3. Because it is up to the female to produce two eggs at once a family history of fraternal twins is only relevant on the female's side.

4. Fraternal twins are also more common as maternal age increases because it seems there is more of a chance of the woman producing more than one egg per cycle as she gets older. The odds are "best" if you are over the age of 45. (Something like 17%).

There are other factors that you can read about at: http://multiples.about.com/cs/funfacts/a/oddsoftwins_2.htm

Hope this helps!

it can be both, once there are twins in the family though, the chances of having another set, or even more than 2, becomes higher.

If you can check back in both family trees and see if there are twins anywhere, just because there aren't doesn't rule out the chance.

I know there are twins on both sides of my family, but I didn't know about my husband's family, neither did he. I had a big baby but untilthe first check-up when they found the heartbeat and then again at the first ultrasound they confirmed there was only one I had my concerns.

I read somewhere (on a pregancy or md website) that fraternal twins tend to run a woman's family, since it's a tendancy to release more than one egg, but identical twins are still random by statistics.
Twins increasing with age could have a lot to do with more women taking fertility medications as they get older.

Twins can be genetic or it can be just by chance. If there are twins your family then obviously you would have a higher chance of having twins than someone who does not.

both...they say that Fraternal twins runs in the mom's family because she must produce 2 eggs within 1 cycle to conceive 2 babies......identical twins are really just thought to be random because the egg must split........many people say that they run in families and skip a generation but everything I read about twins says this isn't so.
I have 14 year old boy/ girl twins.

sometimes it is genetic. usually if your parent family have a twin gene then you are more likely to have it. it just depends.

You have a higher chance of multiple births if you or your husband has multiples in your families.
