I noticed ice was building up on the frame of the freezer door. I ignored it and it eventually prevented the door from closing. I used a knife and a flat head to pick away at all the ice that built up. I removed all of it and now the door closes fully. It's slowly building up again.

As everyone says, you may have faulty seals. They can be replaced reasonably cheaply and will reduce your power bill, because a freezer isn't so energy efficient when it's leaking cold air like that.

Before you go gung-ho into new seals, make sure that the seals are clean. You may have to defrost the freezer to do this, as a buildup of ice can actually stop the door from shutting properly.
Switch off the freezer. Don't whatever you do, try and pry off or hammer off the ice. You run the risk of puncturing the refriigerant and releasing toxins into the air... it will also KILL your fridge (I have done this!).

Also check that if you have drawers in your freezer that they aren't over full, because they can make the drawers stick out too far, and make the door not shut properly, causing ice buildup (I've done this too :D).

So make sure nothing is stopping the doors shutting. And then if you still get ice buildup, see to the seals.

The "seal" on your freezer door needs to replaced. It is not sealing the door when it is closed. You can probably change it yourself. Get the model number and make of the refrigerator. Take it to a Appliance Parts Store and see if they carry it. Easy to change.

it's not a frost free freezer, you just have to keep a check on it, the more you open and close it, the worse it'll be... just make sure when you use it, that you close it tightly, you can also unplug it, and let it thaw, without using a knife on it. Just let it thaw completely and dry it out. It will take even longer for the build up to get in the way of the door.
