I would have to say that the Final Fantasy Series in a whole is the best game ever but indivdually, it would have to be Final Fantasy 7

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas! I used to be a big gamer, but I'm older now with responsibilities, and don't really have much time to spend gaming. However, when this one came out a couple of years back, I spent 2 days solid just completing the missions and unlocking all of the new areas to roam around. I can still pick it up and play it today and find new stuff that I hadn't found before.

You'll never get an answer for that, so many games, so many genre, age group target, and so many of us out there who actually do waste time playing games. I've seen it go from pong and written adventures to the latest console on the market! I 'borrow' my sons and play Tetris and Spyro (which is mine) and I think he has every Final Fantasy! 7 is his best choice too!
Everyone has a favourite! I'm a sucker for cute and dragon!

In no particualr order
Zelda: Ocarina of time -- N64
Doom -- PC version in 1993
Thief: The dark Project -- PC
Super Mario Brother 3 -- NES
Street Fighter 2 -- Arcade
Grand Theft Auto 3 -- PS2
At the end of the day... there are soo many games and interest someone differently to another.
These games for different reasons captured my likings by a mile. Either different, refreshing, or just uter shock when watching it for the first time. etc

I agree it depends on the genre, system AND system generation.
FPS- Unreal Tornament 2004
RPG
PSX- Legedn of Dragoon
PS2- Toss-up between Grandia 2 and Grandia 3, although Atelier Iris 2 is comming up fast.
NES- Zelda
SNES- Chrono Trigger (yeah, I know it was re-released on PSX, but it started here.)
Adventure
PSX- Tomb Raider
PS2- Beyond Good & Evil, play it once and I think you'll agree.
Racing
PSX- Red Assphalt
PS2- Burnout series
Sports
NES- Between Basewars and Tecmo Bowl
PSX- Blitzball Champions
That's just my 2-cents on the subject.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Saints Row. Halo 2. Gears of War. Company of Heroes. Excellent games; it's coincidental how none of these were made by Sony.

Halo, or Sonic for it's cult status.
I also liked the Kinghts of the Old Republic which may be a trifle conversational as I know not everyone managed to get the hang of it.

Depends on your preference. There's tons of different types of games. I'd say Counter-Strike is the best game of all - over all console games, too.
