Machiavelli's "The Prince" was extremely influental on politics at the time, and even now. He basically laid out a guidebook for how to govern. Some of the key points include: get rid of the smart people who will question you and keep the less intelligent ones around, they are easier to control. Present a face of unity and law and order to the public, but do whatever is necessary behind closed doors to acheive what you want.
I know there are others, but without looking back at my copy of the Prince, which I can't find, that's all I can remember.

Macchiavelli states "the ruler must perceive the world as it really is, not as He would like it to be". This is what separaes the "idealists" from the realists.
You can download "the Prince". Definetly a must read. Even better- read it several times- you will not be bored. Short, concise and to the point- not like the fashionable ramblings farmed out by today's "experts"

He was the first to divorce his analysis of politics from flattery, moralism, and egotism. He analyzed the personages of his day and their strategies with cool detached professionalism and recommend only the ones that were effective. No matter how repellent he personally found them.

machivelli was the first realist. he was the father of realism. his idea's were so radical because he said that all human beings are selfish and have all the undesirable qualities one could think of. he is most famous for writing to a prince about how to rule a race that has no morals and make selfish choices. he said to trust no one only yourself, and to be a great leader it is better that your people fear you than love you.
