Like the first person said, many have 4 or 5, but newer, higher end cars have 6 or 7, and i think the new Lexus RS400 is the first to have 8.
More gears generally leads to better efficiency and gas mileage, but the trade off is that the car shifts a lot more. In higher end cars, they design this to be very smooth so that you hardly even notice it, but if your old Geo Prism was shifting through 8 gears, it'd be a pretty rough ride.

Not to make these answers even more complicated, but there is also the continuously variable transmission (CVT). This newly resurrected automatic transmission uses cones and belts to deliver an infinite number of gear ratios (between low and high range). Since there are no "gears" in the classic sense, there are no gear shifts either. Riding in a car with a CVT is unique. You keep expecting a shift but the car keeps going faster and engine rpms do not rise as expected. I have read that the eight-speed automatic transmission equals the CVT in efficiency.

Depends on the car. Most have 4. Some more expensive/newer ones have 5, tho economy cars will still settle for 4. Really expensive ones in BMW, and Mercedes might even have 6 or 7. Some old school, i.e. muscle cars, etc. had only 3. Again, depends on the car.

An automatic transmission can have from 2 to 5 speeds or gear changes, depending on make and model of car or truck.

It varies greatly. Older cars only had 3 gears. Now, they may have up to 6 gears. Good luck. Pops
