When I give long or numerous shoulder massages, my thumbs get really tired. Any suggestions to keep this from happening?

If this is your job then your main option is to do exercises to strengthen your thumbs. Something like plasticene or clay- (bread or cake dough?- new hobby!) would be the best thing to 'work out' on- make it tougher as you get stronger. (or go from scones to rock cakes:) As for a quick fix maybe you could alternate 'emphasis' from one hand to the next.

If not (ie you've got a lucky partner) then what I do is mix it up a bit. There is a gentler sort of massage called effluage. This is basically rubbing or brushing with the palm and flat fingers out from the heart (back or front) towards the neck, shoulders and down the back and limbs.

This stimulates blood flow and nerve receptivity- and is nearly impossible to get wrong. I go from one part to the next. At each area I alternate effluage then pressure so I am resting the thumb- because they would otherwise hurt from constant resistance.

Alternate between your thumbs, other fingers, palms, knuckles, or even your forearms or elbows. My GF is a massage therapist in an oncology unit at a hospital and she does them all day every day. She also ices her hands for a few minutes when she gets home from work.

Oh guy! I bypass over my massuse at present!! She and her husband artwork as a crew. he's a chiropractor and she or he massages! it is really $60 entire, yet she lives an hour and a 1/2 faraway from me and with the gas - that $60 plus can provide up. besides I suggested all that to assert this - pay interest the position there maximum annoying at aka damage. rubdown it inclusive of your base of your fingers for extra aggression and use your fingers for far less around the neck and face - very gentle - same with ft. do not contact the backbone or tailbone. VERY gentle. reliable good fortune!

I'm a LMT, don't use your thumbs too much, use your palms, forearms and elbows....you'll get used to it, when I started 5 years ago I had the same problem, it doesn't happen anymore, also be aware of proper body mechanics
