No, you can use your guitar. They are only saying you should use a Gibson, or Fender is just because those are well known guitars, but you don't need to use those on stage. Use what you are going to be comfortable with.

I've alternated between the piece of crap no-name guitar I first got when I was eighteen, and a priceless 1962 Stratocaster all within the same set. There are no rules, and if it makes you happy, don't let anything stop you.
That said, there is a reason why more expensive guitars are often favoured, and I'll list them:
- Some lower end guitars have a body made out of plywood. They can hide this, since the body is painted in a thick lacquer and you can't see the wood. Plywood as a wood resonates terribly, which gives you a 'clean' sound that's really not very good.
Brand name guitars have an alder body usually, which resonates in an excellent hardwood way. The finish used on higher end guitars, nitrocellulose, also resonates better. You get a better sound.
- The pickups on lower-end guitars are usually fairly poorly made. On the other hand, higher-end brand name guitars come with respectable pickups, like Texas specials. Pickups really do make a difference.
Now what you can do with a lower end guitar is simply swap out the pickups, and put in some really good after-market ones like Seymour Duncan. That can let you turn a no-name guitar into a pretty decent tone machine.

just use your guitar, gibsons and fenders have a certain 'snob' value which performing artisits like. But if it a small time gig just use your guitar no-one is going to care, mind you if you have a spare £1000 i would consider buying a gibson (just cos they rule). Out of curiosity why did you not say what guitar you have 'cos then we could of given you feedback on it?

Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin used a wide variety of guitars onstage...from $50 Sears Silvertones to $20,000 triple neck acoustics.
Ultimately, you want to use a guitar that defines you and your playing... it's all about YOUR sound.

man, anyone who thinks like that is on crack.
brian may from queen plays a homemade guitar for crissakes.
jack white plays old old jc penney guitars with the white stripes. my favorite guitarist is named mick collins from a band called the dirtbombs. he plays any piece of junk he can find.
point is.....as long as you keep your guitar well maintained, setup and adjusted, you can play any guitar anywhere anytime, any stage. good luck
