DIfferentiate your instruction. Check out the books by Carol Tomlinson on the subject. You need to design lessons that allow for the content, format and assessment to be adapted to the needs of individual students. Specific strategies depend a lot on which subjects you're teaching.

Be sure to avoid seperating students by ability level.

What you need to do is to be able to relate to them. They have to know you like them and that you understand them. Once you have a good relationship, it is easier to teach them because they will respond to you. Do lessons that have them interacting with you and one another...lots of group and hands-n activities.
