maybe because the answers that are what they want to hear make them feel like the writer understands them. Most questions seem to be asked with answer in mind though, almost catch 22

No not at all. I've gotten best answers on questions I had disagreed with. I've also given best answers to people that have made interesting points of view and given me another way to look at a situation.

Typically. You can usually tell from the question whether they are really looking for advice and opinions or just confirmation.

It seems to be most helpful, what they wanted to hear, the funniest answer, or not choosing any best answer which sends it to voting.

I think some do. I've had (what I thought) were REALLY good answers, and when I checked back to see what the best was....I couldn't believe it!

Partly but if the answer is helpful that could be a reason or if it was funny. like a yo ma ma joke.

I believe they do. It's pretty much impossible to change someones opinion. People are pretty stubborn when it comes to what they are determined to believe is the truth.
