Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen are the most commonly cited names of Santa's eight reindeer. In the original Clement C. Moore poem "The Night Before Christmas", from which the names of the reindeer came, the reindeer known today as Donner and Blitzen were originally Dunder and Blixem (the Dutch words for "thunder" and "lightning," as rendered in English orthography). Dunder was later reprinted as Donder, which developed into Donner; while Blixem quickly became Blixen and then Blitzen.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was created for Montgomery Ward in 1939, and has since entered the public consciousness as Santa's ninth and lead reindeer.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is notably more known and popular to most children-.

GP is mistaken Half of the original 8 were Female & Half were Male (And Rudolph was def. MALE) If you want a complete list - here goes: in order when pulling Santa's sleigh they were - from the front, females on the left Dancer, Vixen, Cupid, Blitzen - males on the right Dasher, Prancer, Comet, Donner.
According to a verse written by Robert L. May and published in a book to be given to children at Montgomery Ward department stores at Christmas time in 1939 Rudolph (with the glowing red nose) was the son of Donner
Following the popular song, a television special and a feature film Rudolph became a permanent member of the team, his glowing red nose lighting the way on foggy nights.
There was also Robbie (Rudolph's Son) in a BBC Christmas TV special in aid of COMIC RELIEF (but God knows who the father was!)
