Sony has estimate that they will be shipping 400,000 PS3's to the US for the launch day (this friday 11/17/06). Some stores have done pre-orders but those sold out almost instantly. If you are looking to get a PS3 on launch day you will most likely have to camp out, or pay a lot of money to buy one at auction online. Some stores like EBgames and Gamestop are estimating that they will only be getting a few PS3's for each store, so 3-5 plus or minus. Not much room for others.
Larger retailers like Bestbuy will be getting more but people will be camping out at those stores for many many hours throughout the night.
The nintendo Wii looks to ship about 800,000 units on launch day and they have estimated that they will sell 4,000,000 units worldwide by Dec 31st. You may have a tough time getting a Wii on sunday 11/19 but it looks like they will be restocking many of the stores on wed or before black friday. It seems as if they do not have as big of a supply issue as sony does and will be able to fill the demand much better.
If you dont have a pre-order, which i assume you don't, then you best bet will probably be to try a larger retailer like Target, Walmart, Bestbuy (maybe) or Costco/Sam's club (if you are a member).
Also you can check online to see what is in stock at these websites:
http://www.ps3finder.com/
http://wiitracker.com/
They will update with more sites once they both actually come out. I used the 360 site last year to find a site online that had an xbox 360 after waiting at best buy unsuccessfully for many hours over night.
Good luck!
