The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is an international humanitarian movement whose stated mission is to protect human life and health, to ensure respect for the human being, and to prevent and alleviate human suffering, without any discrimination based on nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. The often-heard term International Red Cross is actually a misnomer, as no official organization exists bearing that name. In reality, the Movement consists of several distinct organizations that are legally independent from each other, but are united within the Movement through common basic principles, objectives, symbols, statutes, and governing organs.

In 1862 Henri Dunant, a young Swiss businessman, wrote “A Memory of Solferino” in which he described the horrible carnage he had witnessed on a battlefield in Italy in 1859. Dunant proposed a neutral organization devoted to the care of the sick and wounded of armies at war.

In 1863, Dunant’s efforts let to the formation of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the convening of an international conference in Geneva, Switzerland. The symbol of the Red Cross on a white background (the reverse of the Swiss flag) was chosen to represent the organization. From this conference evolved the Red Cross Convention of 1864.

Clara Barton started the American Red Cross on May 21, 1881. She served as a nurse tending to the hurt during the civil war before that and traveled oversees to help others out in Europe. Upon returning she petitioned President Garfield to help her start an aid organization in America. She became the first president of the American Red Cross.

It started with Clara Barton, a nurse in the Civil War. It was patterned on a Swiss movement she learned about in Europe after the war. I'm sure she and the other founders were Christians, but I don't think the organization's mission was ever to convert people.
