Most computers will do all of this....... I bought a Gateway at Best Buy for $600 (actually a bit less) and it has 80 Gigs of memory, a graphics card, and is light.... all that one needs. Oh plus it has a slot in the side for directly inserting memory cards from a camera. You can definitly get a better deal by buying in a store if you watch the specials, regardless of what some may say. Especially if you are not super up on components and such.

Any laptop you get will be able to do all of what you mention. The only thing that may be a point of contention is the "play games" item. It will depend on what kind of games she's playing. Some of the newer, more advanced games require pretty hefty hardware to play well. You may want to ask her what games she's playing and then look at the hardware requirements on those games if that's an important issue.

Other than that, even the bottom-tier laptops today can handle the other tasks you mention. Just remember, you usually get what you pay for when it comes to technology.

I don't want to sound like a Mac salesman, but I've switched, and I've encouraged a couple of other friends to switch also, and they're very happy they did. No more viruses, no problems with adding things like digital cameras.

At least consider it, I think you and she would be very happy. The macbook is reasonably priced - there are several comparisons on the web now that show Apple computers no longer have the cost premium once associated with buying them.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1200, which I bought a year and a half ago for $500, and it is a great computer for all the basic needs.
