The Egyptians had slaves, usually victims of conquest, but the pyramids were not built with slave labor. They were a big civic project designed to keep the farmers who couldn't work during the inundation busy. They got paid and they were too busy to cause trouble.
The Romans also had slaves, but it was the Roman legions that built the roads and many of the public buildings. Why? When you don't have a war going on, you still have to keep the soldiers busy.

The Egyptians had slaves. As for the Bibical account of the Hebrew slaves, they built the pyramids like a brick manufacturer builds a home. In almost all citified societies, the potter was one of the lowest class of people. The Hebrews were brick makers who ranked lower than the potter.

Yes, slavery was an important part of the economy of Egypt. Slaves usually came from conquests of other lands. Remember, the Hebrews were one of the groups of slaves in Egypt.

Contrary to some popular depictions, the pyramid builders were not slaves or foreigners. Excavated skeletons show that they were Egyptians who lived in villages developed and overseen by the pharaoh's supervisors.
