What exactly is their gripe? Is there a root cause for all the animosity over there? I mean if we asked "what can we do to stop you from being pissed off and attacking us" would there be a simple and direct answer? If so, what?

From what I have seen and read there are several reasons bin Laden and therefore Al Queida are after the US:
1: The US supported his mujahadeen in Afghanistan against the Soviets. When that war went away, we dropped any support for him.
2. Bin Laden is a Saudi and wants the Saudi Government to be done away with and a Muslim theocracy to be in place. He is outlawed in his country - Saudi Arabia.
3. He, bin Laden, does not like the fact that the US continues to support and back the Saudi government.
4. Bin Laden wants all US bases and personnel out of Saudi Arabia, and the present government will not insist they leave. He feels that the presence of the infidels in an insult to Islam.
5. Bin Laden follows the reasoning that the Western (US) influence is against Islam and the strict following of Islamic law, dress, belief, etc. and wants all Western influence eradicated from muslim life. He believes that the US is the root of all evil influence in the Middle East.

They hate us for a variety of reasons, but the person who said it's NOT because of our way of living is just crazy. Yes, it IS our way of life. They would like to see the entire world under Islamic rule - that goes against everything America stands for, so I don't see how anyone can say it's not our lifestyle.
I don't think there would be any answer. Even if we pulled entirely out of the Middle East and let the savages slaughter the Israelis, they'd still find an excuse to start crap. They are mostly very poor people with little education and their gov't would rather have them blame America for all their problems than look to their own gov't. Don't forget that there aren't poor countries - they just have corrupt governments.
It's always easier to blame someone else for your problems than it is to take responsibility and fix them.

The reason they are pissed is because their stated mission objective is to reestablish the Islamic Caliphate, which was an Islamic Empire stretching from India, through the mid east, across the nations of north Africa, and into Europe (Spain, and Portugal to be exact).
They must first overthrow the governments of the mid east and don't view that as a viable possibility as long as America has interests there. Having diplomatic relations, and trade agreements with mid east nations is what would force our hand should the bin ladenists try to actually overthrow those governments. He knows that and wants us out. Trade agreements severed, diplomatic relations severed, bases in Saudi Arabia decommissioned, and us the hell out of there.
That coupled with the fact that he views all Americans and westerners as infidels, because we smoke and drink and play cards etc. They actually declared war on us back in 1998.
The question is; should America have to do everything Bin Laden wants us to do, when it is our god given right as a sovereign nation to have ties and agreements with whoever we want to?

OSama Bin encumbered hated u.s. as quickly as he found out we've been providing Iraq with weapons and armament in the 80s. He grew to become into pissed that we could do any such component. purely he grew to become into meant to be receiving hands from the U. S. governement.

you have a belief system that you would die for (some of your relatives may have die for it already) you want to pass this belief system down to your children, but your children are watching Movies made in Hollywood USA and they don't want to be like you any more they want to be pimps and hos (keep in mind that your believes say if you do these things that Hollywood USA promotes you will go to hell) now what you say "America is the devil", "death to America" maybe so you realize that in order to protect your family and your way of life you must bring down the great Satan that is America/western culture.

We as a country support Israel (not me but our government) and we are infidels (non Islamic) by and large. If we butted out of the Palestinian/ Israeli conflict they may not screw with us but there is still a major difference between our belief system and theirs as a whole. We for the most part believe in a live and let live way of life and they (the extremest) believe that if you do not believe like them then they can freely and righteously destroy you for your transgressions.

They hate us because we're American, "western", and are not muslim. So if America abandons the first amendment and established islam is the official religion, force every woman to cover all their skin, make women inferior (by law, not culture), repeal the 19th amendment, we MAY be able to make peace with Al Qaeda.

WOW propaganda! You guys keep parroting the same old stuff, they are jealous of our way of life...NOT!!! What we need to do is get out of the middle east and leave them alone...but some people feel the need to use their natural resources and cannot keep their grubby little fingers out of the picture. But if you say that to get them to "leave us alone" is to get out of the middle east, they come back with a bunch of blather about how it's not that easy. What's not easy is letting go of the dollars that come out of the middle east. THAT"s why they hate us.
