In 1974 the fascist government of Greece tried to force "enosis" on the island of Cyprus which at that time was part Turkish, part Greek and recovering from British rule/interference. The Turkish Cypriots looked to the wider world for support but the only country to come to their aid was Turkey. This resulted in the Turkish invasion of the island in July 1974.
Since then there has been a mess with the southern part of the island accepted internationally whilst the north has been ignored. Crimes were committed on both sides. People lost their lives, their homes and their livelihoods on both sides. Recently there has been a referendum on both sides to ask the populous to come together - the north accepted this, the south did not. Following that, the south joined the EU.
As no-one but the Turks accept the existence of the north as an entity, surely this means that the whole of the island has (according to international law) joined the EU? How is it then, that the citizens of the north do not enjoy the same rights and freedoms as those in the south?
I find it a mystery and another example of the mess that results in the aftermath of empire building.

Northern Cyprus isn't really isolated from the world - practically anyone can go there for a holiday.
The people of Northern Cyprus aren't really isolated either. But you mean the government of that region, which is Turkish. Basically, the Turks invaded in 1974 (although some Turks had been living there as a minority for decades), and pretended the area they captured and almost ethnically cleansed - chucking out Greek Orthodoxy and replacing it with Islam - as a "Turkish Republic".
The Government there is still run with aid from Ankara, and as an occupying force is ignored by the rest of the world as something it would rather not be there.
The Greek side is accepted because Cyprus speaks Greek, has Greek culture, language, religion, etc.

O for cultural journeys i'd propose you employ a motor vehicle, it makes issues a lot more convenient and your not rushing round to come again onto the bus! i'd definetly propose that you visit 'Lempa' that is a small village positioned close to Paphos. Many artists stay in that village and also you'll see a number of there artwork. also there's a reconstruction of a Chalcolithic contract with round residences. It replaced into built through archaeologists as a thanks to practice diverse construction techniques and to visual demonstrate unit the way it decomposes. Its really fantastically! i'd also propose that you visit a village said as Lefkara they produce the classic Cypriot lace and there are frequently demonstrations and talks explaining how that's made. We also took a visit from Protaras to Paphos to the UNESCO global historic previous website to the Tombs of the Kings. This replaced into fairly staggering. In Paphos they actually have some UNESCO mosaics. The Monastery of Kykkos positioned close to Pedoulas contained in the Troodos Mountains is attractive. they have an impressive museum with previous artefacts and non secular icons. in case you bypass there in spite of the actuality that take some thing to conceal your shoulders and legs. some human beings do promote/employ outfits outside yet its more convenient in case you're taking your own. The Troodos mountains themselves are well worth a visit, they are attractive and there are some gorgeous walks. in case you get the chance also visit Nicosia the position you may look over into the fairway line the position there are the deserted residences dividing the Turkish and the Greek aspect. If I remember rightly there replaced into also a Mosque and a Church that you'll visit. Protaras itself is a outstanding city, above it there's a fantastically little church that you'll walk as a lot as and the coastline is magnificent there too (Its like a small Ayia Napa) in case you do not employ a motor vehicle i'd fairly propose the Jeep Safarie's they take you to places that the buses do not visit, so its a lot extra relaxing and also you note extra of the authentic custom and historic previous of Cyprus. i wish you've a outstanding time! i'm so jealous!

To make the long story short, It is not really isolated, but it is not broadly accepted either because of the Turkish occupation. Please read the replies above: the two last ones are complete, objective and fair-minded.
Don't forget the main point: People never choose instability and problems; it's always their governments who do that!
