Taiping as usual has a great answer, but more on albums themselves. There are two main types of storage devices for coins, albums and pages. Albums come in two varieties, the cheap kind with tight fitting holes you jam the coin into, and another type that you place the coin into, and a strip of plastic keeps it in place. The cheap kind is ok, (kinda), for a VERY low budget collector collecting valueless coins, (think a child collecting common pennies). This type of album will cost about $2, but some coins will come out, others not fit, you can't see the reverse, etc. The better kind you can see the reverse, take the coin out when you wish, and not damage it getting into the album. These cost $16-$28 depending on how many sheets it contains, (how many coins it has to hold). As you can tell, I think if you are going to have any coin worth more than $1 you should have the second type.

Now, there are also plastice sheets that hold coins in containers, (either paper holders or plastic "flips"). These are nice since you can write on the coin holder what it is, grade, price you paid, who you bought it from, weight, etc. The flips are additionally nice since you can easily take it out whenever you wish. This is the standard storage medium for collectors who collect anything but modern precision struck coins with definitive types, (ancients, medieval, colonial, etc).

The best source I have found for all of these things is:

www.brooklyngallery.com

They have an extensive selection of all coin collecting supplies at the best prices I have found.

Coin albums are available at coin dealers as well as 5 and dime type stores. I have seen them off and on at Wal-Mart. If you want to start something you can complete with out spending money for the coins that is, go for the state quarters. You also can almost put a set of Jefferson nickels together from 1938-2006. I have seen them all in the last couple of years except the 1950-D, you may have to buy one for under $16.00 in uncirculated, a little more if high mint state. Cents are out of the question unless you want to spend some serious money. Lincoln Memorial cents from 1959 up has the 70 small date that is some money, but the rest you should be able to find. Don't forget world coins, trying to get one from every country could take a life time. Books on world coins can get pricey, only because they are so big and it takes 4 books to cover 1600-2000. There is one book that is not to bad on world coins, If interested Email me. Now for U.S. coins, get what is called a Red Book 14.95 retail, it has retail prices, but they are really only a guide. What you want is the info inside, like where the mint marks are and it has a helpful beginners grading guide. There is also a blue book that is for wholesale prices but it's prices are not right either, I like the red book it has more info. I will be glad to help if really interested in coins Email me here and I will give you my regular email address.

As suggested above, try ebay or do a web search for coin dealers
