Saddam was a friend to Reagan and Bush Sr., because during the time of their respective presidencies, Iraq was at war with Iran, and the US government supported Iraq and the Saddam Regime. One theory is that the CIA, and the US government, gave Saddam the OK to invade Kuwait because the Kuwaiti government had plans of screwing with the oil supply. However, Saddam went too far, and so the US military had to reel him in and put a short leash on him.

The theory is actually rather plausible, considering that Bush Sr is an advisor to the Carlyle Group, in which the Bin Laden family heavily invests; and considering that James Baker, the Secretary of State under Bush Sr., and whose law firm, Baker Botts, represents foreign oil interests and lobbyists. (As a side note, isn't it interesting that James Baker is now heading the so called Iraq Study Group, to develop a new strategy for the war in Iraq? And, isn't it equally interesting the Baker Botts law firm defended the Bin Laden family against the law suit brought on by the families of the 9-11 victims?)

Saddam invaded Kuwait because he claimed Kuwait was "slant" drilling in sovereign Iraqi territory.

The role that the US played in it is very complex. He actually asked the US Ambassador to Iraq if the US would have a response and that Ambassador gave a resounding "NO". But as soon as it alarmed the International Community (by that I mean Saudi Arabia). The US pulled our ambassador and said they never had the authority to give Saddam the Okay.

There was some Kuwaiti slant drilling which amounted to theft of Iraqi oil in the south. April Glaspi, the US envoy to Iraq, either intentionally or by a screw up made Saddam think the US was ok with the Iraqi punishment of Kuwait. Saddam took it to mean he could eat the whole thing. So the story goes.

I sincerely hope that you're under 14. If not, you have absolutely no excuse not to know this.

Saddam invaded Kuwait because Kuwait has lots of oil and lots of money. The US had a treaty with Kuwait, and went in - along with UN forces - and kicked Iraq out of Kuwait. It was called the Gulf War (or Gulf War I) and the President at the time was George H. W. Bush, the current President Bush's father.

Saddam invaded Kuwait because that's what Sadam does. He was going to take over thier oil fields (which we had to go in and put out.)What role did we plat in it? We are the ones who pushed them out of Kuwait That's what the first gulf war was all about! Unfortunately, we didn't finish the job at the time!

It was practically a business decision. Iraq owed Kuwait a lot more money than Saddam figured it would cost him to take it militarily. The rest was just made up to make it seem like a just war. The part about the slant drilling, that Kuwait was always a part of Iraq, etc. It was about money (and the power that goes with it).

The brutality of the Iraqi troops over the Kuwaiti people was, sadly, horrific.

Bush 41 did the right thing. We went in with 660,000 coalition troops and 'saved' Kuwait. Without getting caught in the quagmire of occupying Iraq. Oddly- one of the people who was quite vocal and compelling, and used the word 'quagmire' to describe what would become of trying to occupy Iraq was non other than Dick Cheney himself. A wise man... back then.

Saddam's claim fro the war was Iraq's claim the territory (land) of Kuwait is actually Iraqi land. But his real reason was his will to control the oil of Kuwait.

Kuwait was part of Iraq until it gained it's independence in the 60's. Saddam never got over it.

The king of Kuwait asked us to help them oust Saddam. So, being the nice guys that we are (don't care what anyone else says) we did. We are always cleaning up other countries messes, then we get dumped on. If we let them do it themselves, they'd be screwed.

Gotta say Big Pen is right.

Don't know if this is factually accurate but, I've read that Bush SR. warned Saddam privately not to invade Kuwait.

Senior wanted the Kuwaitis and Saddam to work out some sort of agreement, but,................
