I'm 60 years old. I majored in English Literature in college. When I was your age I liked Beverly Cleary's books - Henry Higgins, Otis Spofford, Ramona Quimby and the rest.
When I was in college one of my professors gave us her "Henry and the Paper Route" to read in three days. (We were college students; you will take longer.) The professor said it was a fine example of writing about real life, instead of secret agents, cowboy gun fighters, dragons, wizards or pirates.
When my children were younger than you, I read several of my favorite Beverly Cleary books to them. When they were your age, they read some more by themselves.
In a few years I will be reading the books to my grandchildren. They are a little dated - Henry and Ramona do not surf the Internet - but they are awfully good, to my mind.

One of my all time favorite book series was called the Tillerman Series. The first book in the series of 6 or 7 is called Homecoming. It is about a family of four children who are abandoned by their mother and about their journey to their aunt's house. It's the story of how the kids survive and find strength in each other. The other books in the series really go into more depth about the characters afterwards. Great books!

Sherlock Holmes, Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe (any CS Lewis is great). If you like mystery there is always Agatha Christie. Follow your interests and the books will open up to you. Use the library to find books on a given subject and review them to see if they are enough of a challenge. Good Luck!

Try the series called The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper. Magical, mystical but far superior to Harry Potter!
Another good one is The Weirdstone of Brisigamen by Alan Garner.
Philip Pullman's series His dark Materials is very good but quite difficult.
The Whitby Witches by Robin Jarvis is GREAT.
Pongwhiffy, a Witch of Dirty Habits by Kaye Umansky is very funny.
Ask at your library, they will recommend LOTS!!!!

When I was 10, my favorite book was Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli. This kid is so great, he can do EVERYTHING. If I remember it correctly, it's a tall tale so it's fun for girls and boys. It also won a Newberry Medal; kids love to read books that win awards.
I also really loved Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt and all of the Chronicals of Narnia.

When I was ten, I read the whole Hardy Boys series, and some of the Nancy Drew series. They're a little old, but pretty good mystery stories.

"Where the Red Fern Grows" is a great novel for kids.
"Old Yeller" Is an obvious classic
"The Outsiders" is something I read in an adolescent literature class. It is a little sad, but good reading.
"The Chocolate Wars" is a bit dark, but it is also good reading.
