If anyone is still surprised that Bush lies, they haven't been paying attention.

I have a different take on this.
I think Rumsfeld and Bush agreed that Rumsfeld would not leave his office until after the election, for obvious reasons. Whether Rumsfeld resigned or was fired is a different question.
So, in essence, Bush only lied to the troops, the media, the american public, american allies, and the rest of the world. But, what else is new?

Nope - Rumsfield had made comments of his own that he was wanting to go before now and Bush persuaded him to hang on for a bit but with the new political changes - the next person is expected to be better suited seeing as how the Demos have nonstop baggered Rumsfield up to this point.
If Demos spent half as much time proving how to better things that they do in trying to verbally beatdown Bush - they would be quite a group afterall!

He's lied to the American people. like most of them he's in it for himself. that fat paycheck and those benefits for life. He's a joke and i can't stand even to look at him. I hate to hear him open his mouth, in fact every time he does i mute the TV or change the channel. I'll be glad when he's gone. He's killed American soldiers and done all types of damage to this country. and all for his own glory. I can't understand how any one could support him

No, it doesn't make me wonder. All presidents say and do the same thing. Remember Clinton?
Hey, little nit-picker, some of you Yanks don't have much of a life, eh?

Rumsfeld had applied for unemployment benefits a couple of days before the announcement so he knew it was coming. I wonder what he does with his social security checks.
